It’s crucial to have a healthy routine, especially nowadays when the world is collapsing into pieces, and so is our mental health. In the beginning, I struggled to cope with new normality but creating a routine for the morning, day and night have helped me tremendously. And today I want to focus on the morning routine, which sets you in the right mood for an entire day.
A perfect morning: why habits are important
We are all different, and the idea of “Perfect Morning” varies from one person to another. However, everyone is familiar with those days when the bad mood in the morning sets the tone for the rest of the day. Then we struggle with productivity and creativity, we are cranky and sometimes even take our bad mood out on people around us. Creating morning habits and sticking to a routine helps to create a better start every single day, which then leads to fulfilling life.
A couple of years ago I thought that routine means boring, predictable and dreading life. Boy, was I wrong! Embracing a daily routine helped me to ease the stress of digital nomad life, break the dependency on a cup of coffee and boost my work performance.
Pro Tip 1: A routine helps to beat your inner zombies, who whisper you to lay on the couch all day long, procrastinate, mindlessly scroll through social media, and feed the narrative of “I am a lazy person” or “I can’t succeed”.
Habits are one of the most potent tools for productivity. Generally speaking, habits are an automated sequence of actions you repeatedly do. They free the space in our mind, which doesn’t need to think of what to do next. Let’s take advantage of our exceptionally mighty brain, which can carry out several activities with little to no conscious effort.
It doesn’t matter if you are a night owl or a morning person. No one forces you to wake up at a different time than you prefer or expect you to change lives within a week. Just keep in mind that having healthy habits helps you to get things done, have more energy and smash one goal after another as proven by numerous scientific researches.
Morning Routine Checklist for Adults and Self-Improvement Ideas
Now let’s get to business and create that ultimate morning routine checklist for adults. I promise you will unleash your inner potential, beat procrastination, take care of your mental health. In my experience, a morning routine accompanied by the self-improvement ideas brings the best results.
These are 10 simple steps, which you must repeat every morning no matter what to ingrain in your mind that it is your new normality now. That’s how productive morning routine is built. It may be hard at first, but your efforts are worth it:
- Step 1. Plan your day the night before. Write down what you want to accomplish tomorrow and prepare what’s needed (clothes, lunch box, bag, keys, etc.). Leave your phone in another room for the night.
- Step 2. Get up once you wake up. Do not stay in bed thinking “5-10-15 more mins”.
- Step 3. Drink a glass of water. You can infuse your water by adding lemon or another citrus fruit, cucumber and mint.
- Step 4. Make your bed. This simple task brings a sense of accomplishment and signals your brain that the days start now.
- Step 5. Throw on your workout clothes and exercise. Make it at least 15 to 20 mins workout, go for a run or do yoga, whatever you prefer. The idea is to start off the day by releasing endorphins which trigger a positive feeling in the body.
- Step 6. Shower and brush teeth. Don’t forget to comb your hair and apply your morning skincare.
- Step 7. Self-love time. Look at yourself in the mirror, smile and repeat “I am beautiful, I’m smart and I’m going to achieve everything I want in this life”. Or any other affirmations to boost your self-confidence. It’s crucial, do not skip this!
- Step 8. Meditate for 10 mins. Meditation is not about spending 30 mins in lotus pose trying to reach nirvana. It can be quick 10 min session when you connect with your thoughts and practice breathing techniques. Mindfulness apps such as Headspace or Calm or Fitbit’s program may help you.
- Step 9. Eat nutritious breakfast. Or don’t if you practice intermittent fasting.
- Step 10. Read 10 pages of any book of your choice (can be done while eating breakfast). I stopped checking the news in the mornings as they only bring negativity.
Pro Tip 2: Any self-improvement actions must come from a place of self-love, power and wholeness, not a place of deficiency. In 2020 we no longer feed a narrative of “bad, lazy, procrastinating me”. We strive to grow because we love ourselves. Thus it’s essential to include in Morning Routine Checklist.

Pro Tip 3: Planning your workouts ahead saves you a headache. Bookmark your favourite workout videos on IG and Youtube ready to take you to a sweat land. I like to alternate HIIT workouts for legs/arms/abs/full body and low-impact yoga, and Sunday is a rest day.

But I liked what James Clear, author of “Atomic Habits” said “Getting 1 per cent better every day counts for a lot in the long-run”. It’s small changes that accumulate and lead to a happier life.
When I first launched my blog, I thought inspiration is enough to create content. I know it sounds silly, but that’s what you imagine when you think about creative professions. However, in reality, to be a productive blogger, business owner, solopreneur, you need discipline. It keeps you grounded and pushes your forward. It’s one of the blogging tips I wish I knew before I started this journey.
